A population of Cordylophora caspia was studied during a number of years in interconnected waters of different salinity and pollution. The distribution pattern of the colonies is only partly accounted for by these properties of the water. We studied patterns of call acoustics and external morphological differentiation in populations of the dart-poison frog Allobates femoralis occurring in forested areas along a 250-km stretch of the upper Madeira River, Brazil. Multivariate analyses of variance using principal components representing shared acoustic and morphological parameters distinguished three groups in relation to call structure and external morphology: (1) populations belonging to a two-note call morphotype; (2) populations with four-note calls inhabiting the left riverbank; and (3) populations with four-note calls inhabiting the right riverbank. Our results report a case of Amazonian anuran diversity hidden by current taxonomy and provide evidence for the upper Madeira River being a boundary between distinct populations of A. femoralis , and suggest a new taxonomic interpretation for these groups. Samples that did not fit into the general differentiation pattern and the existence of a well-defined contact zone between two morphotypes on the left riverbank indicate that mechanisms complementary to river-barrier hypotheses are necessary to explain the phenotypic differentiation between populations. Our study shows that at least one anuran species shows congruence between population differentiation and separation by a large Amazonian river, as documented for birds and mammals. Conservation efforts should not consider the taxon now known as A. femoralis as a homogeneous entity. There is much within-taxon variability, which can be probably explained partly by the existence of cryptic species, partly by geological barriers and part of which currently has no obvious explanation. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Parasitism of the bagworm, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis Haw. (Lepidoptera: Psychidae), on red cedar was studied at Manassas, Va., U.S.A.
2. Fifteen parasitoids, five of which were hyperparasitoids, attacked the pupal stage of the bagworm. The Ichneumonid Itoplectis conquisitor alone accounted for 58% of the parasitized bagworms.
3. Parasitism by I conquisitor (Say) was inversely related to host size, but independent of host distribution within a tree. Male bagworms experienced disproportionately higher levels of parasitism than females. We conclude that it is small size that renders bagworms susceptible to parasitism rather than sex per se.
4. Ovipositor lengths of I.conquisitor were insufficient to penetrate the larger bagworm hosts (>57 mm); and in fact, as bagworm size increased, the proportion of the I.conquisitor population capable of penetrating the pupa declined abruptly. We suggest that the mechanical difficulties with oviposition, and perhaps the defensive capabilities of larger hosts, are responsible for the relationship between host size and per cent parasitism.

SYNOPSIS. The suctorian Heliophrya erhardi (Rieder) Matthes is attached to the substrate by the flattened ventral side of the cell body. The dorsal is covered by a pellicle composed of 3 unit membranes. Below the pellicle is a 0.4–0.8-μm thick epiplasm composed of 6–8-nm thick fibrils. Microtubules form a network beneath the epiplasm. The epipalsm is penetrated by tube-like pellicular pits, which are lined by the cell membrane and end beneath the epiplasm in a saccule-like enlargement. During conjugation, 2 neighboring organisms form cytoplasmic processes which come into contact and fuse, thus forming a cytoplasmic bridge between the 2 cells. Around the bridge the pellicles of both organisms fuse, and the partners become united by a continuous common membrane system. Across the entire conjugation bridge the 2 fused epiplasms form a septum. Tube-like structures can be seen lying partly in the epiplasmic septum and partly in the adjacent cytoplasm. These structures are open at both ends and represent remnants of the pellicular pits. No trace of the original pellicular membranes can be found at the fusion area within the epiplasmic septum. Diamond (Assembly of species communities. In: Cody ML, Diamond JM, editors. Ecology and evolution of communities. Cambridge: Belknap. p 342–444 ( 1975 )) argued that interspecific competition between species occupying similar niches results in a nonrandom pattern of species distributions. In particular, some species pairs may never be found in the same community due to competitive exclusion. Rigorous analytical methods have been developed to investigate the possible role that interspecific competition has on the evolution of communities. Many studies that have implemented these methods have shown support for Diamond's assembly rules, yet there are numerous exceptions. We build on this previous research by examining the co‐occurrence patterns of primate species in 109 communities from across the world. We used EcoSim to calculate a checkerboard (C) score for each region. The C score provides a measure of the proportion of species pairs that do not co‐occur in a set of communities. High C scores indicate that species are nonrandomly distributed throughout a region, and interspecific competition may be driving patterns of competitive exclusion. We conducted two sets of analyses. One included all primate species per region, and the second analysis assigned each species to one of four dietary guilds: frugivores, folivores, insectivores, and frugivore‐insectivores. Using all species per region, we found significantly high C scores in 9 of 10 regions examined. For frugivores, we found significantly high‐C scores in more than 50% of regions. In contrast, only 23% of regions exhibited significantly high‐C scores for folivores. Our results suggest that communities are nonrandomly structured and may be the result of greater levels of interspecific competition between frugivores compared to folivores. Summary Monospecific antibody directed to cysteine protease of 2-day-old rat epidermis recently characterized as being different from the proteases previously reported was produced in rabbits. By immunofluorescence microscopy and immunoperoxidase staining with an avidin-biotin-peroxidase method the protease was found to be present in the epidermis of rodents of different ages as well as that of humans, but not in the dermis. The staining in germinative cells was more intense than in cells in the superficial layers. It appeared as irregular patches in the nuclei and stained more diffusely in the cytoplasm where small granular components, strongly stained, were identified. The staining patterns in granular cells showed accumulation of the antigen in a granular form. The morphology and distribution of granules resembled those of keratohyalin-like granules in the nucleus and dense homogenous deposits in the cytoplasm. In cornified cells the reaction product was localized by the plasma membrane where concentration of the dense homogenous deposits occurred, suggesting that the cysteine protease is one component of the unique and characteristic structure of differentiated keratinocytes. In addition, the cysteine protease antigen having the same molecular weight as the epidermal enzyme was detected in liver, kidney and lung indicating a wider tissue distribution of the protease. The significance of the protease in regulation of cellular functions remains to be investigated. 相似文献

By fractional extraction of minced bovine heart muscle with iso-osmotic sucrose and phosphate buffer solutions, it is shown that less than 4% of the total citrate synthase in the tissue is in the cytosol. Using citrate synthase as a marker for broken mitochondria, two methods of fractionation of 750 × g supernatants from homogenates of bovine heart muscle show that 10% of the total fumarase and NADP-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase activities are present in the cytoplasm. Homogenates prepared by sonication and osmotic shock and by sand-grinding gave closely similar results as regards enzyme distributions and extent of mitochondrial breakage. The results are compared with those reported for other tissues. 相似文献
